TEZPUR: Project Vartak, is the oldest and one of the largest projects of the BRO in the North-East and has contributed immensely for infrastructure development in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. Lt Gen Rajeev Chaudhry, DG Border Roads Organisation, is on a visit to Project Vartak from March 12 to March 13 to review the progress of strategic works which are at a critical stage of completion.

The General Officer carried out reconnaissance of the site of Rail-cum-Highway Underwater Tunnel being planned on the river Brahmaputra by the BRO. Brig Harish Kumar, Chief Engineer, Project Vartak accompanied the DG and briefed him about the details of North & Southern Portal of Underwater Tunnel in general area between Pachigaon (Jamuguri) and Kaliabor Tea Estate (Silghat). DGBR also carried out the assessment of various ongoing infrastructure Projects in Sonitpur District of Assam and Tawang and West Kameng Districts of Arunachal Pradesh. It was highlighted to the DGBR that all works on Balipara-Charduar-Tawang (BCT) road are progressing well and will be completed by September, 2022. DGBR also reviewed the progress of strategically important Nechiphu Tunnel and Sela Tunnel being constructed on BCT Road. These tunnels will be opened for the use of public by September/October 2022.

DGBR directed the Project officials to ensure that high quality in construction be ensured and given timelines for completion of these tunnels shall be adhere to. These tunnels will shorten the distance and enable the connectivity to Tawang throughout the year and will play a key role in development of Arunachal Pradesh.

With focus on 'Quality in Construction', DGBR also inaugurated the 'Non Destructive Testing Van' developed by Project Vartak. This mobile van comprises all the latest instruments for checking the quality of Roads, Bridges and Tunneling works. General Officer also visited Eastern Base Workshop (EBW) which is responsible for providing the maintenance and repair cover for plants and machineries used by BRO Projects in the North-East region.

DG Border Roads expressed his satisfaction in the proactive roles being played by Karamyogies of BRO in giving required emphasis and push for faster and quality infrastructure development in the States of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam.
