Guwahati: Lumding police have arrested a home guard who has been involved in extorting money from several businessmen by impersonating a cop.

The accused who has been identified as Biplop Rai is reported to have been involved in several extortion cases in the area for the past few months.

According to sources, the Lumding police had arrested two other accomplices of Rai back on October 15, 2021.

Biplop Rai, who is the mastermind in the extortion case, was arrested on Wednesday after the Lumding police received a tip-off from sources.

In other news, two persons were arrested by the Cachar police in connection to the incident in which an Assamese hoarding was smeared with black ink by some miscreants.

The arrested persons have been identified as Raju Deb and Samar Das who are members of the All Bengali Students Youth Organization (ABSYO).

It has been alleged that the members of the All Bengali Students Youth Organization (ABSYO) and the Barak Democratic Youth Front (BDYF) were involved in the incident.

The BDYF chief who had been called by the police for questioning revealed that the BDYF had organised a protest in the same venue where the incident took place but they had informed the police about their plans to protest. He further added that the organisation had no idea about who was behind the incident and claimed that the hoardings were smeared with black ink before they even reached the venue.
