HOJAI: The festival of Maha Shivratri was celebrated with great devotion and fervour in many places of the Hojai district on Saturday along with other parts of Assam.
On the holy occasion, Shiv temples were embellished with lights and flowers.The devotees of Lord Shiva were seen thronging the Shiva temples since early morning. Long queue of devotees were seen outside temples. People of all ages were seen participating in the rituals. Of the temples here, the old temple near the Sibari at Natun Bazar of Hojai stood out. This age-old temple, quite popular among the devotees, witnessed a slew of devotees, who kept coming throughout the day. The temple was also adorned with lights.
Many other areas like Rajbari of Jugijan, Amtola Narshing Asthan Shiv Mandir, Milick Basti Shiv Mandir, Lankeshwari Shiv Mandir at Lanka, Muktinath Shiv Mandir at Hawaipur and Udaipur Shiv Mandir also observed community worshipping of Lord Shiva on the special occasion. Many people were also seen going to the Shiva Festival being held at Thaisobali Shiv Mela, locally called ‘Athaiso Mela’ and believed to be the oldest mela in the area, which is just 15 km from Hojai town. On the holy occasion, akhand kirtan for 24 hours were also held at Milick Basti Shiv Mandir, Muktinath Shiv Mandir and Bhimarali Shiv Mandir premises respectively.
