Man-Elephant Conflict: One trampled to death by wild elephant in Tinsukia

Tinsukia: A body of a person was recovered dead in Ouguri Reserve Forest in Lakhipathar area under Tinsukia District on Friday morning.

The deceased person identified as Bubu Orang (40) died after a herd of wild elephant reportedly attacked him while collecting fire woods from Ouguri Reserve Forest in Lakhipathar Forest Division.

Family members of the deceased also stated that Bubu Orang went out of the home on Thursday evening to collect fire woods and didn’t return back to home thereafter.

It may be mentioned that wild elephant herds have been terrorizing remote and tea garden areas in several parts of the districts in Assam, thus, killing people, destroying houses, prompting villagers to retaliate against the pachyderms with firecrackers and bonfires.

These wild elephants, faced with shrinking forest cover and human encroachment of their corridors, venture into human settlements looking for food and attack those who try to stop them.

Sources said that in recent times many people lost their lives due to man-elephant conflict, but despite this, the forest department surprisingly has not taken any sort of measures to provide security to human life and property.
