Man held for cheating 163 people in Lakhimpur

LAKHIMPUR: A knave who had cheated 163 people of Lakhimpur and Dhemaji district by looting over Rs 5 crore, was arrested by Lakhimpur Police and sent to jail. The knave was identified as Padmeswar Gogoi (40), son of Tularam Gogoi, resident of Raiya Bakal Gaon under Panigaon Police Station.

As per information from Jayanta Deka, the OC of Panigaon PS, Padmeswar Gogoi collected Rs 2.80 lakh to Rs 3 lakh each from these 163 people by convincing them that they would get Rs. 25,000 each month for giving their Bolero cars to Oil India Limited on rent. He paid Rs. 75,000 or Rs 1 lakh to some of these persons three or four months later as the rent of the cars from the collected money and defalcated the rest. Later, he tried to escape when his victims asked him about their arrear rent.

After this was brought to the notice of Jayanta Deka, he filed a suo-moto case against Padmeswar Gogoi and arrested him from his residence. He was sent to jail on Tuesday. The OC further informed that a person from Golaghat was also involved in this cheating. Lakhimpur Police has launched the operation to nab him too.
