GUWAHATI: A youth has been arrested by the cyber cell of Assam police on the charges of threatening a girl of making her "objectionable" pictures viral on the internet.

The girl, who is a resident of Dhekiajuli in Sonitpur district, lodged an FIR with Dhekiajuli police station following which the matter came to light. The complainant said she had received vulgar messages from two unknown phone numbers on Whatsapp on August 15 (Sunday).

Based on the FIR, a case (467/2021) under Section 67 (publishing or transmitting obscene material in electronic form) of the Information Technology Act, 2000 was registered by the police.

An investigation was thereafter launched and a person was detected through the cyber cell. The person was identified as Wahiduz Alom Zaman (son of Mohammed Samsul Alom), a resident of Gotlung village under the Tezpur police station area. Some digital items/evidence were also found from the arrested person's possession. Later, the man was forwarded to a court in Tezpur.

There have been a number of incidents of arrests of people in Assam in the last few years for social media posts related to females. In February 2019, Sonari police arrested a youth for allegedly uploading his girlfriend's objectionable photos on the internet.

In 2018, a man was arrested by police in Assam's Tamulpur for allegedly posting his ex-girlfriend's objectionable pictures on social media.
