Man Jumps Into the Brahmaputra From Bogibeel Bridge  in Dibrugarh

DIBRUGARH: In a tragic incident, a young man jumped from the Bogibeel bridge into the Brahmaputra in Dibrugarh on Friday morning. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) launched a search operation. According to police, the person took lift in a car going towards Arunachal Pradesh from Sukapha Tiniali in Dibrugarh at around 7.30am. Suddenly, in the middle of the Bogibeel bridge, he stopped the car saying that he was having vomiting tendency. As the car stopped, the person came out of the car and jumped into the river. Police said they have recovered some items of the person including a laptop and mobile phone at the spot from where he leaped into the river.

A suicide note was also recovered from the spot in the name of one Aniket Dutta Gupta. Dibrugarh Additional SP (Headquarters) Bitul Chetia said that the person who jumped into the Brahmaputra is suspected to be Aniket Dutta Gupta, a Computer Science Engineering student of the North Eastern Regional Institute Of Science and Technology (NERIST) situated at Nirjuli in Arunachal Pradesh’s Papum Pare district.

Aniket Dutta Gupta, a 19-year-old computer science engineering student of NERIST had went missing from the campus at around 11.15 am on May 24. As per reports, Gupta, a native of Digboi town in Tinsukia district, reportedly walked out of the examination hall after the invigilator caught him with a note in his pocket, suspecting him of indulging in unfair practice.

Aniket Dutta Gupta, is a computer science engineering student batch of 2022-2026 NERIST, Nirjuli. His family members have came to Dibrugarh after hearing the news about their son. He is the son of Ashutosh Dutta Gupta of Digboi. Reportedly, Gupta denied that he cheated, claiming that the note had been in his pocket unintentionally. The incident occurred at around 10:30 am inside the examination hall.

Gupta left the hall and went straight to the hostel. The chief warden of the NERIST reported to the police and filed a missing person report at around 9.30pm when the student could not be found in the hostel. During investigation it came to light that the student had withdrawn Rs 5,000 from his account from the NERIST gate ATM booth. His phone was found switched off.

“The SDRF rescue team is trying to trace the person who we suspect to be Aniket Dutta Gupta based on a suicide note found at the incident site. A phone and laptop were also found,” ASP Bitul Chetia said. Meanwhile, the students of NERIST have boycotted their classes and came to Dibrugarh after they heard the news about their friend.
