GUWAHATI: A man died after a wild elephant has trampled him on Sunday late at night.

The incident took place near Rani Reserve Forest in Guwahati at 12:10 Am.

The deceased was identified as Rajib Boro (35) who was the convener of the Shakti Kendra, Rani Mandal of BJP.

Soon after the incident the forest officials and police personnel from Rani Outpost rushed to the spot and confirmed that the man was killed by a herd of elephant.

Later, after recovering the body it was sent to Rani Community Health centre for post mortem.

The minister of forest in Assam Parimal Suklabaidya has mourned over the death of the villager.

Earlier, the free movement of herds of wild elephants at Nagrijuli Tea Garden in Tamulpur subdivision has made the people of greater Nagrijuli area fearful. On Wednesday, many people were seen thronging the Nagrijuli tea garden to see the large herd of wild elephants. Hundreds of wild elephants are facing severe food shortage scarcity for the past two decades due to deforestation along the Indo-Bhutan border. As a result, a herd of wild elephants from the hills has come down to the public area in search of food and is clashing with human beings.

More than 100 people have died in man-elephant conflicts and more than 15 wild elephants, including calves, have also lost their lives in Tamulpur subdivision in Baksa district in the last 15 years. The Nagrijuli tea garden authorities said that a large herd of wild elephants which had recently come down in search of food had been taking recourse in No. 3 Bansibagh division of Nagrijuli tea garden for the past four days and caused damage to property worth over Rs 2 lakh. People of the area have requested the forest department to take measures to chase down the herd of wild elephants.
