Man seeks DGP’s intervention over ‘custodial torture’ of his son by Tangla Police in Udalguri

TANGLA: The father of a 26-year old youth has sought the intervention of the DGP over the alleged custodial torture of his son by Tangla Police in Udalguri district on Monday evening.

The accused youth was allegedly picked up by the police, based on a complaint filed by a youth, Jeet Malakar (25). According to reports, the accused Rabha had a fight with his friend Jeet Malakar on Saturday night over a drink at a local bar in Tangla town.

“The police picked him up at about 3 pm but he was not served any notice of arrest till Monday night,” said the mother of the youth, Helen Rabha. The victim’s father, Bhabani Rabha, a noted businessman of the town who was out of the town, reached the police station on Monday at about 9 pm where his son allegedly narrated his ordeal. He alleged that a probationary sub-inspector ranked officer, and Officer-in-charge, allegedly tortured him by hitting him with wooden sticks and pressing his fingernails with pliers.

“The police officers demanded money for the release of my son but on refusal, my son was tortured and he was even unable to stand on his foot as he was kept without even food and water,” alleged Bhabani Rabha. He further said, “My son was maliciously prosecuted under various non-bailable sections as I complained to the higher authorities of their misdeeds. It is a blatant violation of human rights.”

Talking to The Sentinel, Bhergaon SDPO said, “We acted as per the FIR and everything will come into light after investigation.”

Meanwhile, the accused was produced before the court of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate on Tuesday where he was forwarded to 14 days of judicial custody.
