Man Trampled to Death by Wild Elephant in Gorchuk of Guwahati

GUWAHATI: In another incident of human-elephant conflict, a man was trampled to death by a wild elephant in Guwahati city in the morning hours of Tuesday. The incident took place in the Gorchuk locality of the city.

The victim was identified as Dwipen Tumung. His body was sent to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital for proper post-mortem procedures.

According to the local people, a herd of wild elephants had strayed out of the Gorbhanga reserve forest. And the ill-fated victim came was attacked by one of the elephants of the herd.

This is not the first time that such incidents have taken place in the region. Several elephants have died or escaped with injuries in the past after being hit by a train or coming in contact with electrical lines. But this incident triggered panic among the local people.

The Deepor Beel located in the region is known to be an important source of water for the elephants in the nearby forest area meaning that these animals often visit the lake. But with the growth of population and rapid urbanisation, a large habitat has been lost, leading to an increased number of conflicts between animals and humans.

In a similar incident, a 45-year-old man was trampled to death by wild elephants in Hojai district last month. The incident happened at night when a herd of elephants attacked the man. Sareth Samse, the deceased, was riding his motorbike towards Baithalangso in the West Karbi Anglong area when he came face to face with the herd of elephants. According to locals, when Sareth noticed the herd, he became alarmed and stopped his bike. However, before he could get away, a tusker charged and crushed him. Sareth was found breathing by the locals who rushed him to a neighbouring hospital. However, the doctors pronounced him dead on arrival. The deceased was an employee at the Karbi Langpi Hydro Electric Project.
