Man who took ‘Bagurumba’ dance team to New Delhi passes away

Kokrajhar: The genius who led the Bodo Bagurumba dance team to New Delhi in 1955, and brought laurels to the State, Biraj Mohan Basumatary passed away at his residence in Aflagaon village in Kokrajhar district at around 11 am on Wednesday. He leaves behind three sons and two daughters. He was 107.

Basumatary was trained as a carpenter at Gandhi Ashram, Sabarmati in Gujarat and he died on the 150th birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi on Wednesday.

Talking to this reporter, family members said Biraj Mohan Basumatary was the first Bodo to lead Bodo Bagurumba to New Delhi during the celebration of Republic Day in 1955 and he was the founder of the Rwisumwi Club-cum-library, Aflagaon. Basumatary was also the founder secretary of Friend’s Union Club and founder of Rupnath Brahma Memorial Field, Ramfalbil. He has received cultural pension from the Government of Assam and he was associated with many socio-cultural organizations.
