Manipur Landslide: Assam Govt Sends Pijush Hazarika To Oversee Rescue Operations

Guwahati: The Assam Government has sent Cabinet Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Pijush Hazarika to Manipur to oversee the rescue operation in the state's Noney district.

"Saddened to learn that 1 person from Morigaon, Assam lost his life, 5 are undergoing treatment & 16 still missing in the Manipur landslide. Cabinet colleague Shri @Pijush_hazarika will be reaching Manipur as early as possible to coordinate in rescue ops," Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted on Friday.

Reportedly, a total of 17 labourers hailing from Assam's Morigaon are reported to have been missing in a massive landslide that took place near a railway construction camp in Noney district of Manipur on June 30.

In addition to this, at least 14 people have lost their lives while several others are still feared trapped inside the debris caused by landslides early on Thursday morning.

''At least 23 people were brought out of the debris of which 14 were found dead,'' ANI quoted Manipur Director General of Police (DGP) P Doungel as saying.

The troops of the Indian Army Assam Rifles and Territorial Army are carrying out rescue operations in the general area of Tupul railway station to save the affected one.

As per reports, the teams of Indian railways, civil administration, NDRF, SDRF and locals of Noney District are also actively contributing to the search.

These forces are carrying out rescue operations throughout the day with the help of engineering equipment including dozers.

Meanwhile, the Civil Administration has cautioned civilians living in downstream areas of the river to take precautions.
