Many BJP MLAs unlikely to get tickets for 2021 polls, says Himanta Biswa Sarma

Guwahati: "The MLA candidates will change because the nature of the BJP is such that they will not look at the faces. They have 3-4 systems based on which the candidates are assessed" Himanta Biswa Sarma, the minister who holds the health, education, and finance portfolios in Assam announced in front of media today, hinting at a sea change in the composition of the BJP party during next year's Assembly polls.

Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the MLAs will be given a ticket to contest the elections based on their performance. "If they (the BJP MLAs) implement the Orunodoy scheme satisfactorily, build roads and bridges, implement the schemes, even the poorly performing ones can increase the chances of being given a ticket. However, not a single MLA can say with certainty that he/she will get a ticket to contest the polls", Sarma added.

The Assam Assembly Constituencies where alliance party Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) has its MLAs will also be assessed, Sarma said. "We will approach AGO President Atul Bora and discuss the seat-sharing during the polls. First, we have to ascertain that we emerge as the majority party with at least 65 seats. Post that, we will discuss the other aspects such as seat-sharing with the alliance partners, among other seats."

In an interaction with the press, the Assam minister also prophesied that the BJP party will win 100 seats in the assembly elections in the State and form the government once again.

"Looking at the Lok Sabha election results, and if we can implement the schemes, I believe the BJP party will finish with close to 100 seats. My personal estimate is 100", Sarma said, adding that the BJP alliance will have at least 100 MLAs to call its own while approaching the Governor to form the Government once again in 2021.
