NALBARI: During the pandemic, child marriages have been performed and most of the child marriages are going unreported in the Char areas of Nalbari, informed sources.

This is despite the provisions of the 'Prohibition of Child Marriage Act-2006.

"Such marriages are kept secret and solemnized at night," said Ramrez Ali, president of Kurihamari Barsulia Anchalik AAMSU. "The Kazi performs the rituals secretly at night and the child bride is kept at home instead of at the in-laws house to manipulate the few concerned people.

The Char region spreads across a vast area of the district with nearly 40,000 voters. The area comprises Kurihamari

Barsulia Gaon Panchayat, Bhangnamari Panchayat and Kalarchar Panchayat.

There are two police outposts — Siyalmari Char Police Station and the Bhangnamai Police Station. "But no government functionaries has taken any step to stop the social menace," complains Mamrez Ali — a conscious resident of the area. He adds that it has resulted in rise in poverty, hunger and lack of care and protection of children.
