Mariani Constituency Likely to Become Congress-Free As 90% of INC Workers Decides to Join BJP

GUWAHATI: Signaling one more defection in the Opposition Congress party the team Rupjyoti or the Mariani Congress workers who are close to former MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi, the Congress turncoat who recently defected the party to the BJP, is learned to join the saffron party on July 5 or 6.

According to sources, Kurmi, who was elected to the Assam assembly for the fourth consecutive term from the Mariani Constituency, has persuaded almost 90 percent of Congress workers of his Constituency to join the saffron party. If information from his close circuit is to be believed, then the Mariani Constituency, a stronghold of the Congress, is likely to turn into the BJP's base.

It is likely that the Constituency may become Congress-free echoing Prime Minister Narendra Modi's all-pervading the Congress Mukta Bharat slogan.

Meanwhile, the Congress turncoat along with 60 former Congress workers met Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday.

After the meeting with the Chief Minister Kurmi said to the media that he and his team had met Chief Minster as the latter has been giving due respect to them. He also met Congress MLA Kamalakya De Purkayasta, which has created speculation in the political arena.

Earlier, Kurmi tendered his resignation letter to Assam Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimari on Friday and resigned from the Congress too. After his resignation, Kurmi spewed venom against State Congress president Ripun Bora, senior leader Rockyibul Hussain, and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, alleging their inefficient leadership for the ill-fate of Congress in the consecutive elections in the State and across the nation

"Rupjyoti Kurmi is a strong youth leader. We have welcomed him to BJP with love. I welcome him to the party on behalf of the central leadership too," said Sarma. On the other hand, Kurmi, who was four-time MLA in a row from Mariani, criticized the Congress for denying the position that the youth leaders deserved. He said that he joined the BJP as he was 'attracted to the dynamism of Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma'.

"I should have joined the BJP long ago. At present, the BJP has marched forward with a dynamic view to ensure development across the State under the leadership of Himanta Biswa Sarma. So, I joined the party with an objective of development in the State," Rupjyoti Kurmi said while lauding the Chief Minister. He honored Dr. Sarma by presenting a trident (Trishul) in the programme.
