Martyr-journalist and human right activist Parag Kumar Das commemorated in Lakhimpur

LAKHIMPUR: Martyr-journalist and human right activist Parag Kumar Das was commemorated with profound reverence in Lakhimpur district on Monday. Notably, Parag Kumar Das was murdered by some unidentified miscreants at Rajgarh in Guwahati on May 17 in 1996 in broad daylight.

The North Lakhimpur Press Club paid deep tribute to the martyr-journalist by organizing a brief commemoration programme in its office under the management of secretary Karuna Krishna Nath by adhering to the COVID-19 protocol. The programme commenced with the lighting of earthen lamp by working president Kumud Baruah while assistant secretary Ajit Kumar Medhi garlanded the portrait of Parag Kumar Das. The members of the Press Club-cum-headquarter journalists of Lakhimpur paid floral tribute to the portrait of the martyr.

On the other hand, the Lakhimpur district unit of Manab Adhikar Samiti (MASS) organized a commemoration meeting on this occasion. The meeting started with Raju Singha, the central committee secretary of the organization, in the chair. While delivering his speech, Raju Singha expressed vehement resentment over the police department's failure with regard to tracing and arresting of the murderers of Parag Kumar Das. Terming Parag Kumar Das as 'a source of neo-thought of the State', Raju Singha said that his immature death was a irreparable loss for Assam. He demanded justice for the family.

The programme was attended by Lakhimpur district unit MASS vice-chairperson Mintu Mustaque, secretary Ibrahim Ali along with many other activists.
