LAKHIMPUR: “Economics is the basic structure of a society. Marwaris, as a business community, have contributed much to the economic growth of Assam as well as contributing immensely to the rich culture and heritage of the state. The people of the community, no doubt, are an integral part of our society,” stated Dr. Girish Baruah, one of the eminent academician of the State, in North Lakhimpur on Sunday while taking part in a symposium held in connection with the 14th Regional Conference of the Poorvottar Pradeshiya Marwari Yuva Mancha.

Participating as the resource person of the symposium titled as ‘Role of Marwari communities in the growth of Assam’, the academician elaborated how the people of Marwari community have enriched Assam in economic, social, cultural and the literary fields since the time when Navarang Ram Kedia (Agarwala), the ancestor of Rupkonwar Jyoti Prashad Agarwala, came to Assam 300 years ago. He, in his lecture, laid stress on publishing a reliable book of history on the contribution of the Marwaris towards the growth of Assam in addition to appealing to them to walk with the people of Assam during the moments of their weal and woes. The symposium was chaired by eminent columnist of the state, Dr. Nirmal Sahewala who briefed an introductory account of the Marwari community quoting the remarks made by Dr, Sankar Dayal Sarmah, the former President of India.

Another resource person, Dr. Sashi Kanta Saikia, the principal of Dibrugarh Kanoi College as well as the Assam State Brand Ambassador of Swach Bharat Mission analysed the assimilating process of Marwaris with the people of Assam. Highlighting the contribution of the people of the community towards the academic sector of Assam, he stated that the economic raise of Marwari people, enabling them even to occupy ranks in international level, inspired the other communities to rise.

The three-day long conference of PPMYM which was entitled as ‘Arohan- steps towards the zenith’, covering the branches belonging to the states of North East, held in North Lakhimpur in a befitting manner concluded with success on Sunday.
