LAKHIMPUR: Hundreds of flood-affected people rocked the campus of the Dhakuakhana sub-divisional administration office on Friday demonstrating mass dharna, led by the Dhakuakhana district units of Takam Mising Porin Kebang (TMPK), Mising Mimag Kebang (MMK) and Takam Mising Mime Kebang(TMMK).

The agitation programme was initiated demanding the control of flood and erosion problems, launching of effective enquiry against the alleged scam regarding the Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) students’ scholarship, mitigation of the anomalies in the Electricity department and Panchayat and Rural Development department, immediate construction of the Dissangmukh-Tekeliphuta bridge over the Brahmaputra, foundation stone of which was laid in 2016, allotment of land pattas to the landless, allotment of the same in the ST stricken areas of the subdivision after land survey. In connection with the protest programme, chairperson of the Mising Autonomous Council, Sunil Pegu criticized local MLA cum State P&RD Minister Naba Kumar Doley.

“Naba Kumar Doley, who is the minister of that State government which expresses zero tolerance against corruption, has failed to initiate steps in order to control the corruption that has been extensively taking place in the subdivision. He is adapting discriminating policies with regard to mitigating the problems in Mising community stricken areas and adapting dominating attitude towards organizational leaders using the police and administration. This is not a good sign to the future of Dhakuakhana,” he alleged.

Similarly, TMPK organizing secretary Jatin Pegu alleged that the existing MLA had hatched shrewd plans to pervert the Mising community revolution. He strongly opposed it and stated that the MLA started to betray the people of Dhakuakhana as the State government led by BJP had done it to the people of the State. “The foundation laying of the Dissangmkh-Tekeliphuta bridge was nothing but a false promise of BJP to win the election,” he asserted demanding a stop to betrayal to the people of the subdivision.

On the other hand, TMPK adviser Indra Kumar Chungkrang excoriated the State government for inking the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with NHPC Limited for the resumption of the construction work of the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project without assessing the downstream impact and without ensuring the security of the riverine people. Similarly, Dhakuakhana district TMPK president Rajiv Doley slammed the State government for not launching any enquiry against the ST and SC students’ scholarship scam committed by 42 colleges of Lakhimpur and Dhemaji, which the Dibrugarh University had already declared as fake academic institutions. The organizations flayed the State government and the local MLA regarding the rest of their demands.
