Massive awareness drive on NRC draft publication

Biswanath Chariali, July 1: Massive awareness drive on the upcoming draft publication of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) is going on in the entire Biswanath district since the last few days. The district administration, with collaboration of the subdivisional administration, Gohpur and Revenue Circle Officers, has been organizing several community-level meetings among the general public in various locations of the district. Meetings are also being organized among the gaonburhas and the president and secretaries of the Village Defence Parties (VDPs).

To spread awareness about the publication of complete draft NRC and to maintain a normal situation among the public, the district administration has been organizing street plays, citizens’ meet, leaflet distribution, poster and banner drive so that no untoward incident takes place in the district. A special song was also been prepared for this purpose to attract people. The ADC and i/c SDO, Gohpur, Indranashee Das has been personally supervizing all such drives in her jurisdiction. In field level, the awareness campaigns are being carried out by the respective Circle Officers of the district. While addressing a press meet held at his conference hall recently, Deputy Commissioner Dhiraj Jyoti Kalita informed about publication of the complete draft NRC and appealed to the public not to panic if someone’s name did not appear there. He also said that such people would get one more opportunity to get their name enlisted in the final NRC.

“The complete process had been done under the direct supervision of the Supreme Court. Separate notices will be issued for all types of complaints and grievances related to the NRC,” the DC added.

Addressing the press conference, the Superintendent of Police, Diganata Kr Choudhury urged the public not to allow rumours to overtake their conscience and to maintain strict vigil over nasty posts or comments of the social media. The SP also said that out of 52 NSKs of Biswanath District, 23 NSKs were normal, 23 sensitive and six were very sensitive. In the press meet, Additional Deputy Commissioner (NRC) Pradip Sutradhar, SDIPRO Prasanta Kumar Borah and other senior officials were also present.
