NAGAON: The district administration, in association with the district police administration on Monday carried out an eviction drive against illegal encroachment of government land here at the greater Batadrova Mouza under Dhing revenue circle in the district.
The eviction drive was reportedly carried out quite peacefully as per schedule set by the administration concerned at Batadrova Santijan Bazar, Haidubi agriculture seed farm, Jamai Basti, Lalungaon Pothar and cleared several hundreds bighas of land encroached for over years by some people of a special community, sources said.
The administration deployed over one thousand paramilitary forces as well as police personnel and also used 10 buldozers , 2 excavators during the eviction drive. No incidents of scuffle or any untoward incident have been reported till the time of filing this report.
The drive was reportedly spearheaded by Nagaon Deputy Commissioner Narendra Kr Shah, Middle Assam Range DIG Saityaraj Hazarika and Nagaon Superintendent of Police Leena Doley.
Speaking to this correspondent on Monday afternoon, Deputy Commissioner Narendra Kr Shah said that more than 300 families had illegally encroached as well as occupied the government land and erected houses there and the authority concerned issued official notification to vacate the land before hand.
Some of the encroachers vacated the land automatically by shifting themselves away at some places. Only 75 families who are reluctant to vacate the land and are camping there till today, he said, adding that they were also evicted from the site quite peacefully during the day.
He said that the detail of the eviction drive would be briefed to the media persons soon. On the other hand, while addressing some media persons here, some people who were evicted by the administration today said that they would stay there by erecting temporary tents.
