Massive plantation drive organized on the occasion of World Environment Day in Lakhimpur district

LAKHIMPUR: Along with the rest of the globe, various institutions and organizations of Lakhimpur district celebrated the World Environment Day (WED) by organizing different programmes on Saturday, overcoming the adverse situation of COVID-19 pandemic situation. This year WED has been celebrated with the theme 'Ecosystem Restoration' which means assisting in the recovery of ecosystems that have been degraded or destroyed, as well as conserving the ecosystems that are still intact.

On this occasion, Telahi Kamalaboriya Anchalik Sakha Xahitya Xabha undertook a massive plantation drive at Khaga Sankardev Shishu/Bidya Niketan and Bishwajyoti Puthi Bhoral premises and Shantipur ME School, Halowajan premises. The programme was inaugurated by writer Prashanta Kumar Nath, the former president of the literary body. The drive was conducted by president Lohit Chandra Khaond, secretary Mintu Sarmah, Niketan Pradhan Acharya Girikanta Nath, social activist Jayanta Hazarika and other members of the literary body.

The Lakhimpur Girls' College also took part a series of programmes in connection with WED. As parts of these programmes, Eco Club, in association with the National Service Scheme (NSS) of the college, organized a State-level poster competition among the students from HS first year to degree level. The first, second and third prizes of the competition were won by Principriya Mahanta, 6th semester student of Bihpuriya College, Jayanta Madhab Dutta, HS 2nd year student of Numaligarh Gyanmarg Academy, and Samujjal Saikia, 3rd year student of Guwahati Government Fine Arts College respectively. The prize winners are feted with prize money.

Moreover, the volunteer students of NSS of the college initiated plantation drives in their areas by creating awareness on environment protection by displaying banners and posters. The Education Department of the college organized an online interactive programme among the students on the occasion while NCC students broadcast 4 videos and 33 banners on environment protection in various digital media.

On the other hand, the Lakhimpur Division Forest Office, in association with the forest guards, planted around 200 saplings of fruit bearing and shadow giving trees by the side of Lakhimpur Bypass at Charaimoria. Moreover, the Forest Division, led by DFO Babul Chandra Das and Chief Beat Officer Atul Baruah, distributed saplings of valuable trees among the local people.
