JORHAT: A large number of people took out a massive protest programme at Teok area in Jorhat district on Friday against the failure of the district police department to check illegal drug trade in the sub-urban area. Hours after the protest, Superintendent of Police of Jorhat, Mrinal Talukdar withdrew the officer in-charge of Teok police station from the post and assured the public to take all necessary action to address their demands.

Talukdar said, "Due to the strong resentment of public against officer in-charge of Teok police station, Dipankar Gogoi, I have withdrawn him from the post with immediate effect on Friday. I have assured the public to address their demands and to take necessary steps against Gogoi on the allegations levelled against him soon."

A 23-year old youth was found dead in a private car on Sunday. The deceased was identified as Utpal Baruah of Hanchara Senchua Gaon. Medical reports revealed that Utpal had died due to drug abuse and addiction. Police arrested two persons identified as Janti Sarmah and Waris Hussain for their alleged involvement of drug smuggling in the area.

The people who took part in the protest unanimously said that a drug smuggling racket was going on in the area and a section of youths had become drug addicts due to the lapses on the part of police.

"The illegal drug trade has been continuing under the very nose of the officers of the local police station. We believe a section of police officers have compromised with such illegal drug traders for their vested interest. We demanded transfer of Teok police station Officer in-charge Dipankar Gogoi at the earliest," said all Assam Students' Union (AASU) Jorhat district unit general secretary Jitu Neog.

In a statement, AASU Teok unit president Rantu Bhuyan said, "We demand to stop illegal drug trade in Teok area and to arrest the culprits." He added that besides activists of AASU Teok and Simoluguri regional units, organizations like Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad, Chutia Students' Association, Asom Premi Yuba Samaj, Lachit Sena and others also took part in the protest in front of Teok Police Station.
