NUMALIGARH: A massive protest rocked the refinery site of Assam Bio-Refinery Private Ltd at Numaligarh on Monday.

The protest erupted after a construction company engaged in the construction of the refinery denied work to its regular labourers. It was alleged by the labourers that the company issued a notice to fire 60 of its labourers who were regularly working in the bio-refinery site. Workers of the bio-refinery gathered in the refinery premises with placards, maintaining physical distancing and wearing masks. The company allegedly gave a notice that these 60 regular workers would no longer be required in the company.

On the other hand, the workers were irked during the protest after the bio-refinery management called police force to handle the situation. One worker in the protest site said, "We came here to speak of our rights. It is totally injustice to us that the company served notice to fire us giving the excuse of lockdown. We came here and protested in a democratic way, we told the officials that we will leave after submitting our memorandum to the bio-refinery management. But they called the police and the police have taken away few of our colleagues."

The irked workers then went to gherao the local police station but police released all the detained workers to prevent the situation from getting worse. The workers also submitted memoranda to the bio-refinery management and the assistant labour commissioner for ensuring their labour rights.
