DIGBOI: Two OIL (Oil India Limited) employees were killed on the spot and another was injured in a road mishap early Saturday morning in Tingrai, Tinsukia district, under the jurisdiction of Digboi police station. The deceased were identified as Jodumoni Hensuwa (54) of Balijan and Debraj Sonowal (32) of Borbil area in Digboi, while the injured, Debasish Pasani was immediately rushed to Dibrugarh for advanced treatment.

According to eye witness, the incident occured when a Maruti Swift Dezire (AS06 M -5275) with 3 persons on board collided with a parked truck (AS 06 AC 9481) early morning here on NH 38 close to Tingrai Bazar. Reportedly, all the three on board in the ill-fated vehicle were the employee of the Oil India Limited, Duliajan.

Sources informed that all three of them were returning home towards Digboi while the tragic incident occured around 8 kilometres ahead in Tingrai on the National Highway wherein the two of the three died on the spot leaving one injured.

A patch of around 17 kilometre-stretch on NH 38 from Digboi to Bengali Balijan area area is highly accident prone and considered as black spot in the district.

Ironically, the menace of reckless driving, irrational and hap-hazard parking along the said stretch could never be seriously taken care of by police and civil administration. The administration ought to tighten its grip upon the retail petrol outlets and the mushrooming dhabas along the NH 38 via Digboi and Makum bypass which hardly care about the parking aspects for the sake of their business.

Highway petrolling by security agencies needs to be more effective and act upon the erring vehicles along the highways in front of hotels, dhabas and OIL outlets without leniency.

Interestingly, of the total road accidents and number of lives lost annually in Tinsukia district, Digboi- Makum NH 38 roads covering Digboi Tingrai, Ultapool, Gopeneri Tri-junction , Kherjan, Bengali Balijan, Naogaon and Makum Battalion shares the highest. However, the corpse of the two deceased were sent to Tinsukia for post mortem. The body was yet to be received by family members till filling of the reports.
