Hailakandi: The week-long Matru Vandana Saptah drew to a colourful close on Sunday. On a concluding day, a long human chain comprising Anganwadi workers, supervisors, and CDPOs was formed with Deputy Commissioner Keerthi Jalli leading from the front. The human chain that traversed through the main thoroughfares of the town culminated in front of Nazrul Sadan building. Slogans were raised in unison to work for the well being of pregnant women and lactating mothers.

A human pyramid was built in the shape of Matru Vandana Saptah 2019. A telefilm was released to build awareness on the program as well. Deputy Commissioner, Jalli felicitated the Anganwadi workers and supervisors of four ICDS projects as a token of appreciation for the hard work they put in through the week-long program to reach out to the pregnant women and lactating mothers even in far-flung and inaccessible areas of the district.

Jalli urged the pregnant women and those with first live birth to contact the nearest Anganwadi center to avail the benefits of Rs.5,000 in three installments under the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana.

The Deputy Commissioner further said the district administration in association with the nodal Social Welfare and other line departments tried to build up awareness through meetings, rallies, door-to-door campaigns, selfie corners, role play by Anganwadi workers, forming of human pyramid and other activities to clear the backlog of cases and to ensure more and more beneficiaries come forward to avail the scheme.

Additional Deputy Commissioner, EL Faihraem, District Social Welfare Officer, J.Daimary, Assistant Commissioner, Parikshit Phukan, Circle Officer, Katlicherra, James Aind, District Coordinator, POSHAN, Rajat Chakraborty and officials of concerned departments were present on the occasion.

Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) is a conditional cash transfer scheme and provides partial wage compensation to women for wage-loss which happens during childbirth and childcare.

The scheme ensures safe delivery and good nutrition for mothers having their first child. However, maternity benefits under the PMMVY are not available to women who are under regular employment with the central/state government or a public sector undertaking.

The benefits of the scheme also do not extend to women who are receiving similar benefits under any law in that period of time.

PMMVY is sponsored by the Centre in collaboration with States and UTs. The Centre to State funding ratio is 60:40 while for the North Eastern States and three Himalayan States, it is 90:10.
