May Day observed across State in a befitting manner

TINSUKIA: The Tinsukia division of NFR Mazdoor Union observed May Day with a protest rally, workers’ meet and blood donation camp. After hoisting the May Day flag, Puluk Gogoi, publicity secretary of NFRMU, in his speech strongly criticized the anti-labour policy of the Central Government. He said their agitation would continue till the new pension policy was withdrawn. Among those who addressed the gathering of workers and employees were central leader Pijush Chakraborty, Chuchen Hazarika, Ashish Biswas, Subhas Das, Kalpana Rajkumar, Bhajan Chandra Dey and Uttam Bhattacharjee.

KALAIGAON: May Day was also observed with a day-long programme at Bholabari nearby Kalaigaon town on Wednesday by Darrang-Udalguri District Dumper Drivers’ Committee. The function was started with flag hoisting by Khagen Ch. Deka, president of Dumper Drivers’ Union. After that, Kandarpa Deka, secretary of the union, lit the lamp and homage was paid by Parimal Deka, advisor of the union. An open meeting was also organized and Khagen Ch. Deka presided over it. Kandarpa Deka spoke about the significance of the day in the open meeting. More than 500 people took part in this meeting.

MERAPANI: May Day was observed at Lakhibari Tea Estate of Golaghat district on Wednesday under the aegis of Assam Tea Labour Union, Lakhibari branch and assistance of the tea garden workers. Social worker Ajoy Murha hoisted the union flag. Ramesh Pator, Basmoti Karmakar and Bina Pator lit the lamp while tea plantation was conducted by Bhima Patowar. In the open meeting, senior citizens like Andias Tirki, Damodar Majowar, Budhin Karmakar and Bahuram Majowar spoke about the significance of the day. Besides, all speakers expressed resentment against the tea garden authority for the poor condition of the labourers. Various cultural competitions and modern games were held among children.

DOOMDOOMA: May Day was observed at Doomdooma by different trade unions on Wednesday. A procession was taken out jointly by the workers of Hindustan Lever Ltd. (PP Factory) Workers’ Union and the Centre for Indian Trade Union (CITU), Doomdooma Branch from Doomdooma Town Field and through the main thoroughfares of the town. Later, a meeting was held with president of the May Day celebration committee, advocate Tarini Deka in the chair. May Day was also observed by Asam Chah Mazdoor Sangha (ACMS), Doomdooma Branch, at its office at Nehru Road. Dileswar Tanti, president of ACMS Doomdooma Branch, hoisted the flag while DN Neog, president of NF Railway Employees’ Union, Tinsukia division paid tribute to the hallowed memories of the martyrs. Later, a meeting was held under the presidentship of Dileswar Tanti. Journalist Abhijit Khataniar who attended the meeting as chief guest, was highly critical of the anti-worker policies of the government and exhorted all the like-minded trade unions to fight unitedly against it..

Boko: CITU and other organizations took out a mass protest rally on NH-37 against exploitation of the bourgeoisie and communal politics at Boko on the occasion of the May Day. Boko AMS Motor Driver Organization organized the protest rally along with a meeting at Boko Middle School. CITU, Boko e-rickshaw organization, All Assam Construction Labour Union and many other organizations took part in the rally and also in the meeting which was presided over by Dulal Rabha, president, Jeherul Islam, secretary, and Rahul Ali of the AMS Motor Driver Organization. Hitesh Das, CITU south Kamrup district convener, took part as chief guest and in his speech he said, “The BJP is indulging in communal politics and creating division among people. This is hampering the labour class. The country’s secularism is being attacked.”

Bongaigaon: “Those who acted against the labour class never survived long. That will happen with the Modi government. It will be destroyed on May 23 when the result of the Lok Sabha election will be declared,” said Ashish Biswas, joint general secretary of North East Frontier Railway Mazdoor Union, on Wednesday in New Bongaigaon. He said this in the open meeting of the May Day celebration programme at New Bongaigaon organized by NFRMU, Hind Mazdoor Sabha, AIREC, NFRPA in collaboration with District Legal Services Authority. The programme started with flag hoisting in all four branches - Bongaigaon, New Bongaigaon BG, New Bongaigaon Running and New Bongaigaon Workshop – which was followed by a bike rally throughout the town.

LAKHIMPUR: Along with the rest of the globe, the International May Day was observed by various organizations of Lakhimpur on Wednesday. The Lakhimpur district units of Communist Party of India (CPI), Sadou Asom Nirman Shramik Santha, Motor Shramik Santha and Lakhimpur District Legal Service Authority jointly observed the event at conference hall of Lakhimpur District Library in a befitting manner. The agenda of the programme organized on this occasion began with the unfurling of flag by Lakhimpur district unit CPI secretary Arup Kalita, who was also the president of the celebration committee. Labour Union leader Nareswar Taku conducted the swahid tarpan event paying tribute to the martyrs of labour movements. Then a rally was taken out in North Lakhimpur town led by the dignitaries of the organizations.

The public meeting organized on the occasion was chaired by Lakhimpur district unit Sadou Asom Nirman Shramik Santha president Girindra Prashad Upadhyaya.

GORESWAR: International May Day was observed jointly by CITU, Nirman Shramik Union, Krishak Mazdur Youth- Student’s Federation at Bishnu Rabha Bhavan at Goreswar in Baksa district on Wednesday. In this connection, Khagen Deka, Kamrup district secretary of Nirman Shramik Union, hoisted the red flag while Karuna Bhuyan and Dharani Boro performed the swahid tarpan. A procession was taken out through the main roads of Goreswar.
