MBBS Seats have been Increased by 60% in Last 2 Years: Himanta Biswa Sarma

GUWAHATI: Himanta Biswa Sarma has mentioned that the state government has been making significant developments in terms of the healthcare sector within the last two years. Speaking about the steps taken under his administration, the chief minister pointed out the increase in the number of medical seats in the state in the same duration.

Himanta Biswa Sarma also mentioned that the state government has provided a health policy of up to Rs 5 lakh insurance coverage to over 56 lakh families of the state to ensure that even the people belonging to the low-income groups have access to quality healthcare. He also said that 12 out of the proposed 24 medical colleges of the state are now functional and ensured a 60% growth in the number of MBBS seats in the state to 1500. The state also has 7 dedicated cancer hospitals now to ensure that the patients from the state as well as the northeastern part of the country do not have to travel to other parts of the country.

He also mentioned that students from across the state previously had to leave the region for pursuing a course in the medical line but with the large number of government medical colleges coming up in the state, students will no longer need to go to other places in search of educational opportunities. This will also lead to the creation of a large number of well-trained doctors who will be able to reach an increased number of people across the state of Assam.

The other medical colleges are also in various stages of completion according to the chief minister, meaning that the number of students will be increasing considerably in the coming years. Additional funding has also been approved towards the faster completion of the work regarding the Tinsukia Medical College and Hospital.
