LAKHIMPUR: Along with the rest of the State, Me-Dam-Me-Phi, the ancestor worship festival of the Tai Ahom community, was celebrated in various places of Lakhimpur district on Monday.

The festival was centrally celebrated at the Tyag Kshetra of North Lakhimpur town with two-day long programme. The traditional Dam-Phi Puja was conducted on Sunday and Monday. The agenda of the concluding day started with the unfurling of flag by organizing committee president Dandi Tamuli Phukan while Dharmeswar Gogoi conducted the smriti tarpan event. It was followed by an interactive programme, which was chaired by Dr. Biman Chetia, the Principal of North Lakhimpur College (Autonomous). Professor Dr. Arabinda Rajkhowa, Placement Officer Hemanta Madhav Gogoi, research student Anwesha Chetia, former Lakhimpur MLA Ghana Burhagohain and many others shared their thoughts in the programme. Souvenir Dam-Phi was released by Rekha Phukan, the retired Principal of Lakhimpur PGT College. In the programme, the organizing committee feted a galaxy of prominent people who had made remarkable contribution to Lakhimpur.

In Dhakuakhana, Tai Cultural Research and Development Centre centrally celebrated the festival in its office premises following the COVID-19 protocol. The agenda of the event began with the unfurling of flag by president of the institution. Then 'Molung' Tankeswar Gogoi conducted the Dam-Phi Puja following the Tai Ahom Religious tradition. Organizing Committee president Priyaram Phukan administered the Maidam Tarpan event.

It was followed by the public meeting which commenced with Jiten Gogoi in the chair. Member of Tai Ahom Development Council, Lalit Gogoi inaugurated the public meeting. Litterateur Dimbeswar Gogoi graced the occasion as appointed speaker while retired professor Purnananda Gogoi and many other prominent persons were present as guests of honour. In the same programme, prominent writer Puspa Gogoi released the Ban-Phi, the souvenir of the event which was edited by Ganesh Chamuah and published by Cheniram Baruah.
