Meet held for repair of Dehing embankment in Demow

DEMOW: Under the patronage of Nitai-Panidehing, a public meeting was held in Rangamancha for the repair of the Dehing (Liabil) embankment which is situated in Gohainpukhuripar on Saturday. Susen Chandra Konwar, an educationist as well as a social worker presided over the meeting. Hirumoni Handique spoke about the aims of the meeting. It is alleged that during the bye-election in Thowra Constituency, State Water Resources Minister Pijush Hazarika had promised to repair the embankment. It is also alleged that due to the negligence of the Water Resources Department, the problem of Dehing embankment has not been solved yet.

Niruj Kumar Rajmedhi, a concerned senior citizen of Panidehing said that in the dry season the Dehing embankment should be constructed. Dhaijya Konwar, the general secretary of Raijor Dal said that if the Dehing embankment breaks down, the people of Thowra Constituency will have to face serious consequences.

Khirud Gogoi, a former student union leader said that the rainy season makes the situation more worse. According to sources, the construction of the Dehing embankment began just a few days after the locals protested. Headmaster of Nitaipukhuri Srimanta Sankardev School Bipin Dutta, H, retired headmaster Phuleswar Handique, social worker Akhim Borah along with other dignitaries were present. Last year in the month of September the Water Resources Department suspended six employees including an assistant executive engineer and a junior engineer of the Demow subdivision, for the anomalies that took place in the name of restoration of Dehing embankment which was damaged by the floods last year. The Department also blacklisted the contractor who was in charge of the work.
