Meet on artificial flood in Dibrugarh

We have gone through the report published in your esteemed daily (The Sentinel, July 4). We like to add here that the meeting had left out a very pertinent issue. That is cleaning, widening and deepening of the big canal flowing across the town. Incidentally this canal dug way back in 1950 did some Yeoman's service to the people of Dibrugarh over the years. But with the passage of time, with increase of population, with the erection of lofty buildings which keep multiplying year after year and with the increase of dumping of debris in the canal the flowing capacity dwindled to a great extent necessitating renovation but all remained chimera for the people of Dibrugarh. A few years back works of digging, renovation also were undertaken but abruptly the works were put in cold storage. Perhaps, our MLA can enlighten us on the matter. We now appeal to the Dibrugarh MLA and also to the district administration to look into the matter and take up the works afresh. About the other steps as revealed from the report all steps mentioned will be very much efficacious. One more loophole we notice is the way the newly dug canals under the footpath are left with shabby debris – we are afraid the purpose of adopting other measure to ensure flushing out of flood water would be meaningless. In fact, there are many such shabby canals on which footpaths are made which can prove to be a liability rather than being an asset to the town. Let us hit the nail on the head to serve our purpose.
