SHILLONG : A huge amount of Rs 8 lakh and liquor has been seized in West Garo Hills district of Meghalaya. Chief Electoral officer, F R Kharkongor mentioned this on 27th of January, Friday. 

Unaccounted amount of Rs 8.96 lakh along with alcohol worth Rs 8,000 were recovered and seized on Thursday, informed the chief. A senior police official informed that, the cash was recovered from an individual who was driving into the state of Assam. 

However, the person failed to provide any sort of valid response and documents as a result of which, police had to make the seizure. 

With this encounter, officials have seized cash amounting to more 29 lakhs from varied regions of Meghalaya after the model code of conduct came into existence, stated the CEO. 

This is the third major bust of unaccounted cash in the state after the introduction of model code of conduct in the state ahead of assembly elections. 

Recently, an amount of Rs 10 lakh was recovered from the South West Garo Hills of the state. As per the reports, members of flying squads of the district seized the money from four people as they failed to offer any proof of source or reason for carrying such a huge amount. 

The chief election officer informed that their claims were under investigation. He had also mentioned previously that, out of 60 constituencies of the state, 34 have been identified as 'expenditure sensitive'. 

It is worth mentioning here that, only one month left before the state goes to the election for next legislative elections. Elections for the 60 members Meghalaya Assembly has been announced for 27th February and the counting will take place on 2nd of March.
