Paul Lyngdoh, the cabinet minister and spokesperson for the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA), confirmed the news on Friday, saying, "We will sign an MOU with the Assam government before August 15, whereby five new villages will come back to us."
Minister Lyngdoh was upbeat, saying that the states are getting closer to a long-term solution through continuing negotiations.

According to him, the government did not take a passive stance in the conflict, especially when it came to the problems that the people of Lapangap faced.

“We sent a magistrate to confront the Assam officials. So, it’s unfair to say that the government has done little,” Lyngdoh asserted.

The historic deal that the governments of Assam and Meghalaya inked in March 2022 is being expanded upon by this most recent development.
According to sources, the deal sought to gradually settle the 50-year-old border issue over 12 disputed areas. The 2022 accord was hailed as a "historic day" for the Northeast by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
As part of the first phase, the states notably settled disagreements in March of last year in six locations with less differences: Gizang, Tarabari, Boklapara, Khanapara-Pilangkata, Ratacherra, and Hahim. Assam was granted 18.51 square kilometers of the 36.79 square kilometers of contested territory in these particular regions under the terms of this agreement.
