SILCHAR: In a bid to strengthen the Public Distribution System (PDS) and enhance last-mile delivery of essential commodities, Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister Kaushik Rai held a high-level review meeting with departmental officers at the District Commissioner’s Office in Hailakandi on Thursday. The meeting aimed at assessing the status of ongoing schemes under the department and setting the tone for an organized rollout of key PDS items scheduled to begin from October.
Reviewing the district-level implementation, the Minister called for a disciplined and citizen-centric approach in the delivery of essential commodities such as masoor dal, sugar, and salt. He emphasised that every step of the supply chain from procurement to doorstep distribution must function with clarity, accountability, and zero tolerance for delays or irregularities.
“We must ensure that the distribution process is smooth, timely, and transparent. Our commitment is to the people, especially the most vulnerable. Every beneficiary must receive their entitlement without hassle or delay,” he said.
Minister Rai further stated that the PDS system is not merely a welfare mechanism but a reflection of the government’s dedication to equitable governance. “It is our moral responsibility to guarantee that every eligible household receives what is rightfully theirs. No excuses, no gaps. The system must work with the precision of purpose and the empathy of governance,” he added.
The Minister also sought detailed feedback from district and departmental officials on the progress of schemes and instructed them to identify and address existing bottlenecks at the earliest. He stressed the importance of coordination between field-level staff, local administration, and elected representatives to make the distribution process more efficient and responsive to ground realities.
