Minister Keshab Mahanta visits Jaleswar embankment; 92 villages under threat

GOALPARA: The Jaleswar Chilarbhita embankment under Lakhipur revenue circle of Assam's Goalpara district has been under constant threat due to the recent flood and erosion.

The embankment which has been giving safeguard to the most of the Jaleswar and West Goalpara constit-uency villages was severely affected by erosion in last 72 hours. On Sunday, Keshab Mahanta, water resources minister, visited the breached embankment and assured all possible help.

Later, it was decided, in presence of the local MLAs, higher officials and deputy commissioner Varnali Deka to construct a ring bundh at the earliest by water resources department in convergence with DRDA to protect the eroded area from further erosion.

Earlier, as per the urgent precautionary measurement, the deputy commissioner ordered the DRDA and Water resources department to take up the requisite works in a war footing manner to protect the bundh with such measurements like launching of porcupines, geo bags, bamboo cribes, bamboo bundles etc.

On Friday, Varnali Deka herself visited the breached embankment and held detailed discussions with the Water Resource department officials and instructed to come up with further preventive measures to stop the erosion.

The Brahmaputra dyke protects more than hundred villages present at the downstream. On Friday, Ashraful Amin, ADC and chief executive officer of the district disaster management authority, through a notice, has alerted all the villages which were likely to be affected by the breach of the bundh. The local people have expressed their satisfaction at this quick and fruitful response by the government and hoped that the works will be completed as per the assurance of the minister.
