BISWANATH CHARIALI: The 'Guardian Minister' of Biswanath District and Minister, Pijush Hazarika launched the Chief Minister's 'COVID-19 Widows Support Scheme' at a function held at the 'Biswanath College of Agriculture' here on Saturday.

A total of 32 women — who had lost their husbands due to COVID-19 —were present on the occasion. Each of the 32 women was handed over a cheque of Rs 2.5 lakh as a one-time financial assistance.

Addressing the gathering on the occasion, the Minister said that though the government cannot compensate for the loss of a loved one yet the one-time financial assistance would help mitigate the financial hardships of the women who lost their husbands to an extent and also help them lead a life of dignity.

The Minister also thanked Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for always being a pioneer in envisioning welfare schemes. "By launching this scheme, Assam has once again shown that it is the leading State in the country to launch unique welfare schemes for the benefit of its people.

"Our Chief Minister has the vision to make Assam figure among the top five States of the country; and, we are moving well in that direction," said Minister Hazarika.

It needs to be mentioned here that women — whose husbands died after testing positive for COVID-19 — are entitled for availing benefits under this scheme. However, the widow must be from the low-income group; and, the annual income must be below Rs 5 lakh.

Among the dignitaries present on the occasion were MP (Lok Sabha) Pallab Lochan Das, former Minister Ranjit Dutta, MLAs Padma Hazarika, Pramod Borthakur and Utpal Borah; as well as Biswanath Deputy Commissioner Pranab Kumar Sarmah; and also Superintendent of Police Ripul Das.
