Pijush Hazarika Visits flood-affected areas in Dhakuakhana, Dhemaji

LAKHIMPUR: Pijush Hazarika, State Water Resources, Information & Public Relations and Parliamentary Affairs Minister, inspected the Sissi-Tekelipuhuta embankment of the Brahmaputra under Dhakuakhana subdivision of Lakhimpur district and the devastating erosion caused by the mighty river on Thursday evening. The minister arrived at Tekeliphuta in Dhakuakhana around 4:30 pm directly from island district Majuli.

There the subdivisional administration and Dhakuakhana Water Resources Department (WRD) Division feted the minister and Lakhimpur MP Pradan Baruah. Then the minister visited Takarchuk, Modarguri, Charanchuk, Papung and Bandena in order to take stock of the Brahmaputra erosion situation. The minister expressed anger on witnessing the low quality works of geo-bag installation as a measure taken to control the erosion affecting the Brahmaputra embankment, which is considered as the safeguard for over five lakh people living in Dhakuakhana and Majuli. He reprimanded the WRD officers publicly and instructed them to take initiatives to implement high quality work to check the erosion caused by the mighty river.

On the other hand, the minister visited the Dhemaji district on Friday. On this day, he inspected the erosion-affected areas under Airamghat, Berachapori under Jonai subdivision in the morning hours. Then he visited Chengajan, Gainadi, Jiyadhol and other flood vulnerable areas under Dhemaji subdivision and took stock of the situations there. He also reviewed the implementation of the schemes adopted by the WRD.

Issuing warning to the WRD contractors, the minister said that there would be no compromise with the quality of flood control and erosion prevention works.
