GUWAHATI: A committee established by the Ministry of Jal Shakti chose four heritage sites among the 75 water heritage sites.

The meandering flow of Assam's waterways carries our tradition and history, according to Urban Affairs Minister Ashok Singhal, who mentioned this in a statement regarding the topic.

The Ministry of Jal Shakti committee has chosen four heritage water sites out of the 75 water heritage locations, which is a source of great pride for Assam.

"There is no provision under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958, to declare a site as a Water Heritage Site under the Archaeological Survey of India," the ministry's statement accompanying the announcement stated.

And, in honour of India's 75th anniversary of independence, the Ministry of Jal Shakti established a committee to select 75 Water Heritage Structures (WHS).

A total of 421 nominations from States/UTs, Central Agencies, NGOs, and the general public were received. Out of these nominations, the committee recommended 75 water heritage structures, of which four were from Assam.

There are many states and union territories where India's water heritage structures can be found. One such projects can be found in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, while there are four, three, and five of these structures in Andhra Pradesh, Assam, and Gujarat, respectively.

Delhi has one site, while Bihar and Chhattisgarh each have two. In comparison to Karnataka, which has five structures, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Jharkhand each have one. Ladakh has one building, while Kerala has two.

Punjab has one, Puducherry has one, Manipur has one, Meghalaya has one, Mizoram has one, Odisha has two, Telangana has four, Tripura has one, Uttar Pradesh has four, Uttarakhand has two, Madhya Pradesh has six, Maharashtra has four, Manipur has one, Meghalaya has one, Mizoram has one, Odisha has two, Punjab has one, and Puducherry has one. Rajasthan has seven.
