DIGBOI: Pulakesh Mahanta, an influential BJP leader of Margherita in Tinsukia district, was targeted but had a narrow escape when miscreants opened fire at his vehicle at around 2.15 am on Wednesday which was parked at his residence at No. 1 Lajum village. Sources said that miscreants fired two shots at his car. The Tata Nano bearing registration number AS-12-6939 bore enough testimony of the bullet attack.

Police officials of Margherita subdivision said, “The car was found hit within the residential complex of Mahanta. The entry of the bullet was noticeable but we are yet to ascertain the exact nature of the incident, the motive behind the perverted act because of the absence of other circumstantial and technical evidence like remains of the cartridge after the firing in and around the place of occurrence.”

The police have taken the car into custody and detailed investigation to this effect was being carried out till filing of the report. A massive search operation has been launched to nab the culprits behind the crime.

That the unnatural incident of firing on the vehicle of the BJP leader post-Lok Sabha election apparently was a fallout of imbalanced political equations cannot be ruled out. Similarly, coal trade that has picked up ground again after a brief halt for election may have led to business confrontation, resulting in such an incident. No casualties have been reported so far.
