KOKRAJHAR/BONGAIGAON: Jayanta Basumatary, MLA of 31-Sidli (ST) Legislative Assembly Constituency on Monday distributed 20 wheelchairs among the orthopedically impaired Persons with Disabilities (PwD) of his constituency in a programme held in the conference hall of District Center, Kajalgaon.

The wheelchairs were given away by him in the presence of Babidita Gogoi, Secretary of District Legal Service Authority (DLSA), District Social Welfare Officer Shyameswar Mushahary, District Information and Public Relations Officer Gagan Narzary, Secretary of Chirang District Press Club Jayanta Debnath and a host of officials and staff of Chirang district social welfare department.

In his inaugural speech, MLA Jayanta Basumatary expressed his hope that the wheelchairs given to the identified PwDs would help in their day-to-day activities, including school going children. He urged the physically challenged persons and their family members not to lose hope at their misfortunes as several schemes had been initiated by the government to provide assistance to such people, including orthopedically impaired students to pursue their education to become self-reliant. He was apprised that the district social welfare department had so far identified 4,300 PwDs in the district and they were being helped by the department through their appropriate schemes.

Addressing the programme, Secretary of DLSA Babidita Gogoi dwelt upon many legal provisions of the constitution to facilitate and help for the well being of PwDs. On the occasions, she also highlighted the Assam Employees Parental Responsibility Norms for Accountability Monitoring (PRANAM) Act, 2017 and Maintainance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007 for generating awareness among the members present.
