Golaghat: Activists of the Mod Mukta Asom Dabi Samiti on Wednesday staged a massive protest near the Deputy Commissioner’s office to demand an alcohol-free Assam. More than thousand women from various places of the district gathered near the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Golaghat and shouted various slogans against the government as well as all political parties.

The president and secretary of Mod Mukta Asom Dabi Samiti, Prabin Das and Rikumoni Rajkhowa respectively, and Birangana Nari Shakti convener Namita Hazarika said that the tragic hooch incident in Golaghat and Jorhat shocked the State. Even after this tragic incident, illegal liquor was easily available in the State.

“The government and district administration have not taken stringent action against the prime accused in the hooch tragedy. Due to easily available illegal liquor, young people are getting addicted to alcohol, thus ruining their lives. Anti-social activities have increased due to alcohol consumption,” they said. The organization threatened to continue their agitation till the government banned alcohol in the State. Later the activists submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister through the Deputy Commissioner of Golaghat demanding an alcohol-free Assam.
