DIBRUGARH: Dibrugarh University, in association with district administration, Dibrugarh, held a Model G20 on Friday at Dibrugarh University.

This was part of a series of events that Dibrugarh University will be hosting during India's presidency as the nodal institute for the G20 activities of Dibrugarh district. Dibrugarh University is also identified as one of the 75 institutions of the country by the Ministry of External Affairs and RIS, New Delhi to undertake G20 University Connect initiative.

The event began with a brief inaugural session chaired by Prof. Neeta Kalita Barua, the chairperson of the Steering Committee for the G20 events to be held under Dibrugarh University. Prof. Barua delivered the welcome address in which the significance of the G20 and the Model G20 was highlighted.

In his speech, Vice Chancellor of Dibrugarh University, Prof Jiten Hazarika provided an outline of the G20 and stressed the importance of entities such as universities in the larger process. Obja Borah Hazarika, Political Science, Dibrugarh University, presented the concept of the Model G20 and emphasized the significance of India's presidency of the multilateral forum.

The guest of honour for the event was Dr Bhaskar Jyoti Gogoi of the Assam State Youth Commission, who spoke on the importance of simulations such as the Model G20 and Model United Nations for students in their future careers. Prof DK Chakrabarty, the G20 coordinator of Dibrugarh University, delivered the vote of thanks during the inaugural session.

The Model G20 began with a welcome address by the delegates from India, who outlined the importance of the G20 event as a significant economic platform to promote financial stability in the world. Three delegates presented a brief overview of the following topics- economic consequences of the crisis in Ukraine, the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the importance of climate finance.

In the next session, the delegates from the 19 countries and the European Union presented their country positions on the topics under discussion. In the post-lunch session, the delegates took part in a negotiation and discussion session in which they had to form resolutions through deliberations.
