HAILAKANDI: A month-long training programme on 'Economic uplift to weavers through handloom weaving' under SANKALP project (Mainstreaming Aspirational Districts through Skill Development) got underway at IMAA SHG at Dholai-Mollai II Village here on Monday.

Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADP), Narendra Kumar Shah inaugurated the training programme in the presence of Superintendent, Handloom and Textiles, Dharmakanta Nath, Deputy Handloom Officer, Abhijit Debnath, representative of LAC 7 MLA, Guleh Ahmed, Block Project Manager, Katlicherra and demonstrator, Handloom and Textiles, Mukhtar Hussain.

In his address, ADC Shah said the training being imparted under SANKALP as part of aspirational district skill development programme will help to hone the skills of the weavers in coming up with new designs that would fetch them a readily available market and a constant source of livelihood to them. Shah also said the administration will assist the weavers in buying looms and other implements if the response from them is good enough. He said to begin with five sets of looms have been provided and more funds would be arranged by the administration for providing assistance to the weavers. He urged the weavers to take help from the instructors and departmental officials to meet their requirements.

Departmental staff, SHG handloom weavers and individual weavers were present on the occasion. The training is being implemented by the District Handloom and Textiles department and sponsored by the Hailakandi district administration.
