TINSUKIA: An illegal structure constructed to erect Netaji’s statue on railway property close to the congested NH-37 in Doomdooma town was demolished on Wednesday by a team of Railway Police from Tinsukia Division following protests from several organizations. According to reports, Doomdooma MLA Durga Bhumij, from his LAD Fund (2017-18), allocated Rs 2 lakh to the All Assam Bengali Yuba-Chatra Federation to erect Netaji Subash Chandra Bose’s statue and foundation stone of the statue was laid on railway land in January 23, 2017, without obtaining any NoC from the Railways. The Doomdooma Town Committee accorded an NoC without verifying its implication.

As the construction started on Tuesday, several organizations opposed the construction as the site was very close to NH-37 and would create an impediment in the future extension of the NH-37. Such irrational decision of the MLA has been flayed by the organizations, including local journalists, who while questioning the wastage of public money, demanded that no statue whosoever should be constructed on either side of the national highway.
