PATHSALA: The State cabinet on Monday approved the creation of Bajali as the 34th district of the State. People of Bajali have expressed happiness and hailed the decision.

The demand for the creation of the district was raised long time back and even various agitation programmes were taken up by various organizations like the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) andAsom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP).

The government is reportedly ready to appoint 10 officers and created 85 posts for the new district. The government had announced the decision in December last year. While campaigning ahead of the last assembly election, State Education and Finance Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa had promised in a meeting at Pathsala to upgrade Bajali as district. The district will comprise Sarukshetri, Bhabanipur and Patacharkuchi LAC areas.

Mridul Talukdar, president of the Bajali district AJYCP, expressed happiness at the government's decision and appealed to separate the non-Bodo villages of Patacharkuchi LAC from Baksa district and merge with the new district.

Giridhar Choudhury, a senior advocate and president of Pathsala bazaar committee, thanked the government for the step and said that the demand for creation of Bajali district was raised since 1960.
