JOYSAGAR: The All Sivasagar District Joint Democratic Left Forum (ASJDLF), in association with the Ujjani Asom Toilo Khetra Suraksha Sangram Samiti, staged a mass protest near the ONGC Gelakey oil field head office on Wednesday. The president of the ASJDLF and also the district secretary of the CPI, Kanak Gogoi led the protesters in the protest against the proposed move to privatize the profitable oil field under ONGC Sivasagar at Gelakey. The protesters alleged that a section of anti-Assamese officers of ONGC had filed a manipulated report before the ONGC management that the Gelakey oil field could not be explored further and hence there was no chance of profit. So, the Gelakey oil field could be given out on lease to an American oil company which would be profitable for ONGC.

Hundreds of activists gathered before the head office of the Gelakey oil field and took out a protest rally in the area. Besides, the leaders of the organizations held a street meeting regarding the issue where they opposed the move to privatize the Gelakey oil field.
