DOOMDOOMA: Makum-Saikhowa (Sadiya) Ralpath Surakhya Samity [MS(S)RSS] submitted a memorandum to the Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw through Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways and MP, Dibrugarh Parliamentary Constituency, on Sunday for provision of better railway service in Makum-Dangri section of NF railway.
The five-member delegation comprising Secretary Dhiren Deka, Adviser Santanu Das, members Dulal Borgohain, Prakash Dutta, and Lalit Gogoi met Minister Sonowal at his Dibrugarh residence and apprised him of the difficulties faced by the people of the region due to inadequate railway facilities.
In the memorandum, it was demanded that the Makum-Dangri section railway line should be extended up to Saikhowa (now Dholla) just like it was before the great earthquake of Assam in 1950. Although the project was approved in the 2012 Railway Budget, it was kept in abeyance till date for reasons best known to the authority.
The other demands of MS(S)RSS included the reopening of the old Doomdooma railway station (1885) having Public Reservation System (PRS), provision of a halt station at Talap Balibazar as per assurance given by the then Deputy General Manager (G) vide his Letter No. Z/97/G Dated 08.07.1999.
It also demanded the rescheduling of the current DEMU train running between Makum to Dangri as per convenience of the passengers and replacement of the originating station Makum junction with New Tinsukia junction like before. For reducing the travel time of the train, it demanded resurvey of the unnecessary level crossings (LC) having less traffic congestion and deploying gate men at the LC gates lying on the highway for security reasons.
Its other demands included the extension of the terminating/originating station of Jorhat-Tinsukia passenger train and Tinsukia-Naharlagun Vista to Dangri and immediate implementation of the construction of a railway line from Rupai to Parasuram Kund as the Final Location Survey (FLS) was completed. It was pointed out that in keeping with the policy of the government to enhance air, road, and rail connectivity of strategic border areas, this work should be taken up by the railway authority in the right earnest without delay.
