TEZPUR: A Multi-State Mock Exercise on Earthquake Disaster for Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Assam conducted by the National Disaster Management Authority will be held in Tezpur to exercise and rehearse key disaster managers in their roles and responsibilities with respect to possible emergency situations through simulated scenarios, in this case an earthquake scenario.

Sonitpur is one of the nine districts of Assam selected for this exercise and the members of District Level Incident Response Team (IRT) for the district took part in a table-top exercise today conducted via video conferencing. Today's table-top exercise involved the stakeholders giving their detailed response to each painted/artificial simulation disaster-related scenario. In continuation to this activity, a physical mock drill exercise will be conducted simultaneously in the selected nine districts of Assam on November 17.

As part of the mock drill on November 17, a probable scenario of an earthquake at 9 AM will be taken and earthquake siren will be sounded to alert all public and other stakeholders. All members of the IRT will have to switch to wireless forms of communication and the Incident Response Team of the district will assemble at the District Emergency Operation Centre (DEOC) at DC's office. A staging area will be activated at Church Field, Tezpur which will be used to activate and deploy resources such as SDRF team/ fire tender/ ambulance, etc., as per information received. There will be five incident sites in Tezpur, Tezpur Govt Girls HS & MP School, Treasury Office, Imperial Prem residential building, Kanaklata Civil Hospital and Chowk Bazaar, taking various probable situations such as fires, building collapse, chaos and injuries, and teams will be deputed to each of these sites for rescue/ evacuation, etc.

The exercise will be carried out to help visualize likely impacts and validate preparedness and response effectiveness of the response mechanism in the district. The probable situation will include reports of widespread destruction from many areas, damage to government and private building, landslides, fire outbreaks and situations requiring evacuation.
