Muslim Law Board Stress on Matrimonial Relations with Same Community

GUWAHATI: In a stir that has again raised the issue of 'Love Jihad', the All India Muslim Personal Law Board has advised that the Muslim youths should only go for a matrimonial relationship with the same community people to check the occurrence of love jihad controversy.

The Board is of the opinion that the offspring between a Muslim and non-Muslim couple would not be genuine or ideal Muslim.

Since the last few years, the love jihad controversy has been dominating political as well as a social discourse in many parts of the country. Several states governments have enacted laws to check love jihad as it has been a center of controversy and untoward clashes.

Opposing inter-faith marriage, the AIMLB General Secretary Maulana Saifullah Rahmani said that interfaith marriage is banned according to Sharia law.

He added, "Inter-faith marriage is banned according to the Sharia Law. Such couples would never give birth to a pure Muslim child. Islam does not consider a marriage between a Muslim and a non-Muslim." The Muslim Law Board official also appealed to the Mosques, Madrassas, to take steps to prevent inter-religious marriage.

Condemning the fact that a large number of inter-faith marriages happened in the country due to various reasons, Rahmani appealed to the Muslim society to prevent further occurrence of marriage between Muslims and non-Muslim.

It may be mentioned that Himanta Biswa Sarma who was then during 2020, the Assam Finance, Health, Education and PWD Minister, said that the government of Assam is considering bringing transparency in marriage laws, as it will make it mandatory for both bride and the groom to disclose information like their religion and the source of income. The decision came amidst the ongoing discussion on the issue of 'Love Jihad.'

Speaking on transparency during marriages, Dr. Sarma said that no individual should get married if there is no transparency between the couple. The disclosures which are important before the marriage are the religion of a person, what a person does for a living, what is their income and so on. However, Sarma clearly mentioned that their idea of the marriage transparency laws is not connected with 'Love Jihad.' What Minister Sarma emphasized, is that no one should hide their identity, job, or income.
