Muslim woman from Assam's Sivasagar performs last rites of adopted Hindu brother; post goes viral

Sivasagar: A viral post on social media, wherein a Muslim woman performs the last rites of her adopted brother, is now standing as a living testimony of the bonding between Hindus and Muslims in Assam, a land which treasures the ideals of saint-reformer Srimanta Sankardeva and Islamic preacher Azan Fakir alike.

Muskan Begun, a woman hailing from Upper Assam's Sivasagar, posted a few pictures on social media in which she can be seen performing the last rites of her brother in accordance with Hindu rituals.

"I know many will take affront to this. Many have already subjected me to harsh words," Begun wrote in a lengthy post on Facebook, explaining her deed. Muskan then goes on to say that she does not believe in any faith other than 'humanity.'

She goes on to inform that the deceased man, who was an orphan, had no one else but her to call "family." For many years, they had known each other and observed the bond of brother-sister, she said.

Expressing her woe at the passage of the man whom she had known as a brother for many years, she said that she was fulfilling her last responsibility as a sister by setting fire to his pyre.

Begum said that once, she had promised the unnamed deceased that she would stand beside him always as his sister. "Brother, look up; I have come here to keep the promise made to you," she wrote.

In the final sentences, she questioned the man why he did not keep his end of the bargain by staying with her. "My beloved brother, why did you leave me; why?" she asked.

This heartbreaking post has instantly gone viral on social media, as people have no doubt been able to connect with the sorrow and hopelessness of having lost a loved one.

Further, the woman, by performing the last rites of a Hindu man, has set an example of communal harmony in Assam.
