Must Give Exemplary Punishment to Perpetrator of Nandita Saikia's Murder, Demands APCC

GUWAHATI: The state BJP government, which has failed to maintain law and order, must give exemplary punishment to the perpetrator of Nandita Saikia's murder, demands APCC.

Assam Pradesh Congress Committee expresses deep concern and anguish at the untimely demise of Nandita Saikia, a brilliant student of Dhemaji Moridhol College and resident of Dhakuakhana.

The BJP- led Assam Government has failed completely in maintaining law and order in the state, as evident from this dastardly murder. The broad daylight attack on this young student with a machete, leading to her death, exposes the inefficient administrative system. Assam has been at number one among states in crimes against women in the last 3 years. Women are not safe in a state where the government is hell-bent on protecting cows.

The role of the so-called vigilant Assam Police, in an incident where the girl student was brutally murdered in broad daylight, is shrouded in suspicion. How was it possible? We demand that action taken by the police against the perpetrator of the crime should be made clear. We also demand that the government be vigilant against dastardly incidents like Nandita's murder and provide exemplary punishment to her murderer.

It seems that murder, violence, and rape have become easy during the rule of the BJP government. Even as a sorrowful atmosphere prevailed at Nandita's residence yesterday, another young girl was reportedly attacked with a dagger at Changsari, near Guwahati. The release on bail of the IIT Guwahati student accused in a rape incident in March exposes the hollow nature of women's security in the state. Surprisingly to the indignation of all women the Gauhati High Court described the rape-accused student as a future 'asset' of the state.

Such incidents reveal that the security of women is only a slogan in the state, while an opposite picture is seen in reality. Such a regressing environment for women needs to be countered strongly by the Government in power to give the right messaging to the perpetrators and supporters of such heinous crimes against women.

APCC demands that the government conduct a probe into the entire incident that led to the untimely death of Nandita Saikia and provide the strictest possible punishment to the guilty. A sharp lookout should be kept to ensure that the guilty cannot escape punishment through any loophole in the law.

Government should also ensure women of the state by announcing steps taken to see that the safety of our sisters and daughters is also their priority other than expressing hyper concern only for cows.
